Novel, sustainable materials

There haven’t been many innovations in period products since the tampon was created and patented in 1931. The only changes? The introduction of forever plastics and exploitative farming practices. We’ve seen enough—we’re ready to be the change we've wanted to see.

Our tampons are the first (and only) compostable tampons on the market. We use only 100% organic cotton so you can trust your tampon. We’ve innovated a disability-friendly applicator to make tampons more accessible to everyone. And, our bioapplicators are made of compostable materials, meaning your tampons won’t be living in a landfill for centuries to come.

Join us as we disrupt the period industry for the better.

Your safety, our priority

Your health is our top priority. Your Founder & CEO is a public health researcher by trade, making us well-equipped to put our promises into action.

For the first time in decades, single-use plastic consumption is on the rise. There is a shocking lack of biomedical data on menstruation and very little knowledge about how it fits into overall health. Comma knows better products and better data can change this.

Innovation in this space is meaningless without increased accessibility. Everyone deserves access to period products that help them feel safe and in control. That’s why we re-invest our profits into fighting period poverty around the world.

Comma is more than your tampon brand; we’re your advocate and ally.

Circular impact with your cycle

Make a difference every month by choosing a sustainable, ethically sourced tampon. Comma users support: organic and sustainable farming practices, reproductive justice, fighting period poverty, and public health’s understanding of periods and reproductive health.

Your period is an opportunity to invest in a better future for us all. With your cycle, embrace a brighter, more sustainable future. The planet—and all those living on it—will thank you.

Frequently asked questions

What are your products made of?

Our tampon bioapplicators are made of compostable plant-based bioresin: they look and feel like forever plastic, but break down at a much faster rate. The tampons themselves are made of 100% organic cotton. You can read more about our materials on our product page.

We're also piloting new materials that are even more sustainable. Learn more about participating in product piloting here.

What's the best way to dispose of my tampon after use?

There are multiple ways to dispose of your tampon after use, and we encourage you to choose the option that works best for you. If it's what makes the most sense for you and your community, feel free to throw all elements of our products in the trash—they'll still decompose in a landfill faster than conventional products. All of our packaging is recyclable, and our bioapplicator is certified compostable. The cotton tampon can be thrown in your compost, too, but decomposition will vary.

How is Comma investing in social and environmental justice work?

We are committed to using sustainable and organic farming practices when sourcing our materials, and all of our partners are committed to the dignity and respect of their workers. We are also continuously conducting public health research to create healthier, more sustainable materials for our single-use products. For every sale we make, we re-invest in causes that fight gender injustice and period poverty. Read more about our mission on our story page.

How do I safely use a tampon?

Here are some guidelines to help you safely use a tampon:

  • Make sure to wash your hands before and after using a tampon.
  • Read and follow all instructions for the particular tampon you are using.
  • Per FDA guidelines, change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours. Never use a tampon more than once.
  • If you are experiencing pain, fever, or any other symptoms associated with using a tampon, contact your health care provider.
  • Learn the signs and symptoms of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and ways you can reduce your risk. If you experience any symptoms of TSS you should seek medical assistance immediately.
    • Symptoms of TSS include:
      • Sudden fever
      • Vomiting
      • Diarrhea
      • Fainting or feeling faint
      • Dizziness
      • A sunburn-like rash

    • Ways to reduce your risk of TSS include:
      • Wear your tampon for no longer than 8 hours.
      • Wear the lowest absorbency tampon you can.
      • Use tampons only while on your period.
